CLARKSVILLE, TENN. – Gateway Chamber Orchestra announces their second set of performances of Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov’s work, La Pasión según San Marcos (St. Mark's Passion) on Saturday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, March 19, at 4:00 p.m. The concert will be performed at the George and Sharon Mabry Hall, located on the Austin Peay State University campus in Clarksville, Tenn.
Following their debut performances to pandemic limited audiences, the Gateway Chamber Orchestra again presents an all-star cast including the composer’s original creative partners, Mikael Ringquist and Reynaldo Gonzalez-Fernandez. Mr. Gonzalez-Fernandez premiered the title role and is the only person to have performed it, having done so more than 70 times around the globe.
Golijov’s vibrant, immediate, pan-Latin American approach brings a multi-cultural response to Bach’s historically significant St. Matthew's Passion. This exciting concert weaves salsa, flamenco, Gregorian chant, Capoeira, African drumming, and numerous folk traditions into an entirely new vision of the last days of Christ. In his review last season, music critic Joseph E. Morgan commented, “There is just too much to discover in what may be fairly described as the first masterwork of the 21st Century.”
Music Director Gregory Wolynec says, “In my entire musical career, I have never seen a work take such a profound hold on both the people who performed it and those who received it in the audience. Words cannot do justice to what Osvaldo has created and the superhuman effort it takes to present it. Last year’s two performances were both met by more than a minute of silence following the closing notes before the audience could finally let the moment go. The instantaneous standing ovation that followed said it all. We are reuniting our entire cast and have expanded our chorus significantly. I can’t wait!”
